About The Event
This Thanksgiving season, we are following the lead of Fresh Start Church & providing Thanksgiving Dinner for local families in need. Will you help us??
When I was a little girl, I remember driving into Philly with my Mom and brother and seeing (or finally becoming aware of) homelessless and the struggle of humanity at a deep level for the very first time. It changed me. I watched my Mom roll her window down and hand a homeless man money, and something in me was ignited.Â
My brother and I were fired up and we wanted to magnify what my Mom had just done. I remember it consuming my mind. I used to dream of being able to give them socks, coats food, love. I had never realized that that level of brokenness existed.Â
Unfortunately as a kid, I had no wheels to get me to where I needed to go, so to take matters into my own hands, my brother, stepsister, and I collected (let me be real trasparent...stole) food and clothes from my Dad's apartment and set them up under the boardwalk on Brighton Place in Ocean City, because we heard that there were people who lived under the boardwalk. (I didn't realize they meant under the boardwalk in Atlantic City, not Ocean City, but whatever... our hearts were in the right place).Â
I went on to develop a program called Mission: Arts for the Boys and Girls Club, traveled to Bangladesh & Russia to work with orphans & the poor, served the homeless population in our area by preparing & serving meals, donating money & clothing, playing with kids, rocking babies, and so much more.Â
Please hear me....I don't write this to boast. I write this for one reason...
TO SHOW YOU HOW POWERFUL YOUR ACTIONS AS A PARENT ARE TO YOUR CHILDREN.
They are watching you. Trust me. My Mom's simple act of kindness and generosity changed something inside of my brain, my heart, & my soul in that moment. I saw what it meant to be human. I saw what it meant to share a piece of my heart with someone else who had nothing to give me. I suddenly saw with new eyes. And it set me on a course that changed my life forever.Â
This Thanksgiving season, we're providing that same opportunity to you and your family. I encourage you to talk to your children about poverty & homelessness and what it means to be a kind, loving, generous human. In church, we would call this "Bringing Jesus to others". Â You can call it that, or simply call it being & bringing LOVE to the world. It's powerful and profound. What do you say? Are you ready to take the next step and extend love to others in your Community?
